OGONEK & COOH

Electro meeting...

What are your objectives now ?

O : Doing anything which is connected with DnB, Electronic and live music, but at the 1st place there is producing and promoting.

C : Now we are much more into making music. We stopped organizing parties for a while. But now we have lots of invitations here in Bulgaria, and a growing international interest in our work too. I have 10 vinyls released over the last year, half of which for different labels such as : TOV, GAIN , Bass Rejects. And all that is returning to me with a greater power now , because I have much more work to do and more labels are interested in releasing my tunes these days. I have over 6 forthcoming releases for different labels such as G2, Evol Intent, TOV and Bass Rejects ; and also an album with remixes of some of the best Bulgarian Jazz and Folk players, coming out really soon for a Bulgarian label called Kuker Music.

What about the DnB scene in the rest of Bulgaria ?

C : Sofia is the place for the big DnB events , but we also have some fans from other cities too who are coming to Sofia to go to our parties. And I am really happy with it because I think they are the blood that will make the scene bigger and stronger.
O : Our crew is also trying to promote DnB in different cities, so it’s something growing…

What about the music industry in your country ? Is there any vinyl shop ? What about venues for parties, radios etc...?
O : The music industry in Bulgaria is very bad. There is no place for DnB releases, because most people like pop-folk or gipsy music. Moreover, one of our biggest factories for plates pegged out, and there’s no other place for making vinyl records. However, the DJs prefer to buy vinyl on the internet, so there is no future for any vinyl shop here I think.
There is no FM radio playing only DnB in Bulgaria, you can only find it on the internet. Just one FM radio called Nova sometimes plays some DnB. We released our stuff with our hands : we made 200 homemade CDs and handed them out to our friends. But HMSU label is coming soon...
C : Bulgarian music industry is full of crap music. All the TV programs are full of shitty pop stars and stupid rock bands. But luckily there are still some places where we can play our music in some On air TV shows for urban culture. Here we have few vinyl shops but they are becoming just what the commercial DJs are looking for and there’s no chance to get any heavy DnB tune or some more experimental music. As far as the venues in Sofia, they are not so many, but until recently we had a brand new party centre with 2 stages, so it may get bigger in the near future. Until now, the biggest parties we did were held in some sports halls.

What kind of entertainment do young people enjoy in Sofia apart from partying (art, culture, cinema, etc...) ?
O : We like everything we can define art, like documentary movies, performances... and lots of crazy things…
C : Young people are getting more and more into the artistic forms they see coming from other countries : Graffiti, for example, are really well known here, and we have lots of good graffiti artists.

How do you feel the future of the electronic music, especially of DnB ?
O : For a couple of years, there have been more and more DnB producers, it’s been like an infection, and I think it will continue to spread. Everyone will make his own way in that style, and maybe the sound system will remain abnormal, so we will get more deeply into the vibe. Respect for all the infected !
C : I think we will also have more and more DJs, producers , promoters and parties, of course. That’s why I’m sure the future will give us a chance to see the music changing and to listen to some new styles and sounds, thanks to all the new people who will get involved into it. DnB will absorb more influences both from the Techno and the Experimental styles. It will become more and more DIGITAL !!!

What does the integration into the European Union mean for you ?
O : On the one hand, I think that a big part of the underground scene will disappear, we will be more controlled… It also means invasion of super-fucking- markets with bad fruits, bad vegetables and bad food in general… Prices will rise for sure. Today, a coffee is 10 cents, a beer is 40 cents, let’s see how much it will  cost in a year…
On the other hand, standards will become higher, there will be more cultural events and it should be easier to invite guests from abroad to play DnB here.
C : We can’t miss this change, so let’s give it a try and get the best of it. I know it will be a hard time for Bulgaria to join that big union. People hate it for this reason, but everyone hopes that it will make our lives better.
For the young people, it’s a good opportunity because they will be able to travel and learn from the cultures of the other European countries. I hope that the people who make all kinds of art (like us) will realize themselves fully in our country, because now we think it better to go abroad to meet with success. I hope that more people will get interested in what we are doing here, we don’t want to become commercial, we just want to get enough to live on our music (without doing junk jobs)…
